Best Fishing Place in Alaska

Fishing Season in Alaska, Not for Every Angler

Alaska is a country with a main climate, polar, and three secondary climate types:

In the West and South, this is oceanic. It has a long and thin strip of Pacific coast. The rains abound throughout the year, especially in autumn, and the ocean softens the temperatures a bit. The rest of the southern zone is characterized by being less rainy and drier but, at the same time, colder.

Inland we have a continental subpolar climate. Inside the minimum averages are -30º, given in very cold and snowy winters. Interestingly, in summer they can reach 20º. Here the rain is scarce, always compared to the rest of the country, with an average of 250 mm per year and precipitation especially in summer.

In the north we find an arctic climate. As you can imagine, the winters here are extremely cold, as well as long and very dark, with areas where the sun does not even rise for two months. The maximum temperature in winter is about -22º while in the hot months the maximum is usually about 8º, occurring in the month of June. summer is really short. In the north, rainfall is scarce and occurs from July to September.

Alaska Fishing Trips

Thus, it is a region that, within what might be expected, has areas of contrast although it is a cold country, of course, something that means that not all of us can fishing tour in alaska. Winter is snowy and very cold, lasting many months and turning dark. Summers are short and somewhat mild although, of course, very cold compared to ours.

They deserve a mention islands like the Aleutians, full of rain except in summer (when it also rains) and with a constant fog that cools the area, despite the fact that, here, the temperatures are somewhat milder. As for the water, the maximum temperature is 14º and occurs in August. The minimum is 5º and it occurs in the coldest months, January and February.

Thus, it becomes clear that, without a doubt, fishing season in alaska is tough, even when we travel in the times of highest temperatures. Even so, going to the country to practice is a unique experience, seasoned by the transparency and purity of its waters and, of course, by the very different environment in which we will find ourselves.

What Types of Species are Caught in the Alaska Area?

There are not many species that we can get when practicing sport fishing in Alaska. It is somewhat understandable considering the weather conditions. However, the few that we find are of great purity and unsurpassed quality, impossible to find anywhere else on the globe.

Crab and Spider Crab

The Alaskan crab and, of course, the spider crab, are known worldwide and, of course, if you are going to find them anywhere, it will be here. However, whether you get some or not is something else. And it is that crabbing and spider crabs is a very dangerous activity that is really well paid and in which there is a lot of work due, precisely, to those very dangerous conditions. Even so, if you dare, you will find them, in autumn, in the Bering Strait; the season starts at the end of October.

In this region we find five species of salmon, which are caught all year round but which, during the summer, literally collapse the rivers. These are:

Alaska salmon species types
  • King salmon. King or royal salmon appear in June, theirs being the longest fishing season. It is huge and its meat is one of the most demanded in the world.
  • Silver salmon. Coho or silver salmon, more similar to the Atlantic salmon, which is what we usually see, is caught between mid-June and mid-October. It is much less caught than the rest of the species. It is the species that supports trolling, although it is common to catch it in nets for consumption.
  • Chum or keta salmon. We have glossy, semi-gloss, and dark variants. We found it in the waters of the southeast of the country, reaching the Arctic Ocean. Gillnet and Seine are fished. It is the last species to be seen, back in the months of September and October.
  • Sockeye salmon. You have the varieties of bright sockeye salmon and semi-bright sockeye salmon. With an average weight of 3 kilos, this is already an easier specimen to catch, making it a Seine and Gillnet. It is located in the southeast of the country. Currently there is a shortage of specimens, so we cannot stop advising the capture and release during the season, which lasts from mid-May to mid-September.
  • Pink salmon. Even smaller is this fish, which is also found in the southeast area and whose variants are shiny and semi-shiny. Trolling, Seine and Gillnet are captured from mid-June to mid-September. It represents more than half of the total annual salmon catch units.

Rainbow Trout

This species of trout, which we find in intensive preserves in our country, is typical of the southernmost zone of America and moves to spawn. It lies to the north, in Bristol Bay. The best time to get hold of them is in the months when the nights start to get longer, you will find many and very beautiful ones.

Charr Dolly Varden

A large salmonid which is abundant in this country, more than in any other, despite being found throughout the Pacific.

Black Cod or Gindara

Be careful with this one because you have to go to deep waters to find him. In addition, in this country its capture is controlled and certified as one hundred percent sustainable. Its fishing season is wide, From march to november. It is located in the northeast area of the Pacific Ocean.

arctic grayling

It is a small salmonid with large scales that, due to the rest of the species found in the country, goes largely unnoticed. It is very curious because it has a huge dorsal fin and in the form of a candle.

yellow eye rockfish

It is one of the largest of the Sebastes and longest-lived, and is also known as red snapper, although this is not a formal name. Found in deep rocky areas of the eastern Pacific and is not used to moving.

Halibut or halibut

It is very abundant in the southwest, in the island area. The pieces easily exceed 30 kilos in weight there being many that double the number and some that even quadruple it.
